The Murang’a County Assembly Sectoral Committee on Public Works, Roads, and Transport conducted a strategic educational visit to the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA) headquarters today to review regional transit integration and local infrastructure alignment.
The delegation included Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) and the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads, Transport, and Public Works, Arch. Pius Macharia. The engagement focused on aligning Murang’a’s upcoming infrastructure developments with the standardized transport frameworks established for the Nairobi Metropolitan Area (NMA).
During the session, the committee received comprehensive technical briefings on the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) and the ongoing rollout of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS). The discussions centered on cross-border commuter dynamics and the legislative mechanisms required to support a unified, multi-county mass transit network.
Architect Pius Macharia noted the importance of institutional alignment, stating that harmonizing county-level legislation with NaMATA’s metropolitan planning is essential for creating a connected regional transport ecosystem.
A key segment of the briefing detailed ongoing and planned Non-Motorised Transport (NMT) infrastructure within Murang’a County. NaMATA officials highlighted notable upgrades designed to create safer and more accessible spaces for pedestrians and cyclists, including projects in Kenol (2.5 km), Kabati (1.8 km), and Makenji (0.7 km).
These targeted upgrades are engineered to improve accessibility, protect vulnerable road users, and enhance overall connectivity for residents within these expanding commercial zones.
The visit also provided an opportunity for assembly members to evaluate current stakeholder engagement frameworks and public awareness strategies between the Authority and its constituent counties.
The committee emphasized its commitment to working in synergy with regional bodies to ensure the delivery of efficient, safe, and sustainable transport solutions. Moving forward, both NaMATA and the Murang’a executive team agreed to maintain close technical cooperation to ensure local transport projects seamlessly support the wider metropolitan transit strategy
