NaMATA has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Nairobi Enterprises and Services Limited (UNES). The strategic partnership is designed to bridge the gap between academic research and public infrastructure, leveraging data analytics to advance sustainable urban transport solutions.
The collaboration will directly support evidence-based transport planning and management across the five counties comprising the Nairobi Metropolitan Area: Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos, Murang’a, and Kajiado.
Under the new framework, NaMATA will draw upon UNES’ multidisciplinary expertise and technical capacity to guide critical transit initiatives. The partnership establishes a collaborative framework focusing on four strategic pillars: Policy, Planning, and Integrated Urban Development; Data, Digital Innovation, and Performance Management; Sustainable and Inclusive Mobility Systems; and Capacity Building, Research, and Knowledge Transfer.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Eng. Francis Gitau, the Director General of NaMATA, emphasized the critical role of academic partnerships in modernizing public infrastructure.
“Universities are incubators of knowledge and human capital,” Eng. Gitau stated. “Public institutions cannot operate in isolation if they are to respond to the fast-changing demands of metropolitan mobility.”
By integrating rigorous academic research into policy and planning, the collaboration aims to position the Nairobi Metropolitan Area as a regional model for inclusive, forward-looking transit systems. The partnership underscores a shared commitment to building commuter-centric infrastructure, demonstrating the transformative potential of structured cooperation between government agencies and academia.
